Here are some pictures of what happened when our shipping crate was delivered. I had been looking forward to having some furniture in our empty house, but everything came into the house at once, and I've been trying to restore order ever since. Good thing we have a garage.

The names here are reversed! They had quite a good time playing with empty boxes. I never want to see another cardboard box again (for a long time anyway.)

We just moved into our house in Vero Beach. We rented a house in the Vero Isles neighborhood. It's on a canal that connects to the intracostal waterway. This house is very central to the town of Vero Beach, David's new job at Piper, and to the beaches here. The scenery is beautiful: palm trees, mango trees, hibiscus bushes, big shady trees that I don't know the names of, and lots of other tropical plants. It's hard to say what I like best about this house. (1) The pool in the back yard is Solana's favorite part. This has already provided hours of refreshing fun. (2) The location is convenient. I'm so glad I can ride my bike to many places, and even if we do drive, it will be a short drive. This makes my life much easier with a toddler who hates being strapped in for very long. (3) I have windows! Lots and lots of windows! They have screens so I can open them! They look out at beautiful plants, water, and sky! They let in light and fresh air! This house doesn't smell musty and gross. (4) We moved from 3300 square feet to 1300 s.f. Simpler. More intimate. Less time maintaining the house means more time for my kids. I think we're going to have a lot of great times here.

Hi! Seems like it's been ages since I've blogged. You have probably given up even checking on this blog. Well, I'm still here. Just living my life. David turned 37 yesterday, and it was Raziya's birthday too. It's springtime in Savannah, which means I can sometimes go without socks, and I even turned the ceiling fans on for the first time this year. The live oak next to our driveway is keeping me busy with raking and sweeping. Solana even swept the driveway one day and the then moved her pile into the wheelbarrow - while I was in the house nursing Lotus. I found another turtle in our driveway. This is the second one we've found, so I guess they live in the hedge. We played with it for a while and then put it back in the camellia bushes. There was a crazy thunderstorm that blew large hail all the way past the hot tub to the back door. Solana enjoyed eating it! I loved Pippi Longstocking books as a kid, and last weekend Solana and I went to see the play at the Savannah Children's Theater. We were in the middle of reading the book, so the story was fresh in our minds. We sat in the front row, and met "Pippi" after the show. She did a great job of bringing Pippi to life. The next night Raziya and I had a night out at the Wormhole, listening to stand-up comedians and playing pool. She's much better at it than me. Last Saturday we dressed up as fairies and went to Oatland Island for their annual Fairy and Gnome Day. Solana and Marley both got prizes in the costume contest. That was the icing on the cake at the end of a fun time. Solana got a bubble set with glasses that let you see butterflies in the bubbles, and Marley got some modeling dough/clay/putty that kept the kids (and me) busy for hours. The next night we went for dinner to celebrate the birthdays, and then for a walk down River Street at sunset. Lovely. Here's some photos.

I turned 35 last Friday, Oct. 29. I wasn't expecting much to happen, but I had an awesome birthday! Solana made me a banner that said "happy birthday to Anita" with each letter on it's own piece of paper, taped to a string. And she made me a card, but she makes me several cards every day anyway! David gave me a new motorcycle jacket, helmet, and gloves. That was fun, since I've always used hand-me-down gear that was too big. Now I just have to find the time away from the kids to go for a ride! I did get some time away from Lotus while she napped, and my sister called my on Skype! Haven't talked to her since they moved to Albania, so that was special. In the evening we went to Oatland Island wildlife center for their Halloween Hike. Solana dressed up as a witch, with purple hair under her hat that I sewed in there, David was a vampire, with red contact lenses, and I was Rainbow Rainbow (Solana's idea). Lotus wore her regular clothes. It was fun watching Solana have a blast. She got a balloon animal, watched a magic show, trick-or-treated along the trail from people in costumes, went on a hay ride and played in a bounce house. Then we went home and David stayed with the kids while I went out for some kid-free time! I love my kids, but since I am always with them, it's fun to get away once in a while. The next day David gave me a cake and 3 flavors of sorbet and we had a little coffee party. It was just the two of us; the kids didn't even want any. I feel happy and refreshed. Thank you to everyone who sent me cards, emails, and phone calls!

Solana was trying to get me to say yes to something this morning and she tried bribing me by promising to give me "a box of cherries, a string of fish, and a bouquet of flowers." I said yes!

Later, she asked me to buy her more french fries. I told her I would when she finished the ones she had. She told me, "I need them now because I'm afraid that when I'm done with those my hungry will have run out". My point exactly!

Costa Rica

We just got back from a week in Costa Rica visiting Gina and her kids, Sophia (almost 5) and Melissa (2 months). We went down there with Dana (Nana) and Uncle Bill. We stayed in Jaco near the beach. One day, David and Uncle Bill and Lotus and I made a trip to the volcano Arenal to visit the hot springs there. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of this place because it was raining and I didn't want to get the camera wet. Besides, pictures would not have done justice. This was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. There was hot water flowing in streams and waterfalls and pools, all surrounded by lush landscape and flowers. Paradise. Long time no post! We were away from home for almost 3 weeks, on a cruise with David's family. Ed and Annake celebrated their 40th anniversary and took us and Karen's family on a 14 day cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego via the Panama canal. We spent 2 nights in Florida before the cruise; 2 nights in San Diego after the cruise, and 1 more night in Florida on our way home. I didn't want to come home, except to do laundry. Solana really enjoyed traveling also, although she missed her friends. Lotus was quite the spectacle on the ship; our two kids were the only ones on the ship under the age of 9. Anyway, it was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here are some pictures, with more to come.

I can't believe all the things that happened today. (1) Lotus woke up with a new tooth (her second). (2) Lotus started crawling. She has been getting better and better, but today she got the hang of it and took off. (3) Our niece, Rebecca, has been staying with us for 5 weeks and she left today to go home to Edmonton. (4) Aunt Flo surprised me with her return after a 16 month absence. (5) David got me a new camera/phone (his phone broke and he took my old one.) (6) I rode my bicycle with both kids on it for the first time. Lotus was in the backpack and Solana was in the back seat. I hadn't tried it before b/c I didn't think they would both fit back there. (7) To top it off, Solana put herself to bed. We were in the family room and she just left the room without saying anything. After a few minutes I went to check on her and she had emptied her bladder, undressed, and pulled the covers over herself and was fast asleep.

Lotus is trying to crawl. Yesterday she rocked forward onto her hands and knees, took a "step" backward, and then sat back down. Usually she ends up on her belly. Then her first tooth cut through her bottom gums. And she drank from a bottle for the first time (breastmilk of course) while mom was out with a friend. I just thought I would blog this since I will never write it down anywhere else to remember.

Solana is always asking to hold Lotus. On this occasion she kept asking while we were driving, so as soon as we parked I put Lotus in her lap. She is such a loving sister and always rushes to comfort Lotus as soon as she starts fussing. She sings "snow baby glow", a song she made up. Sometimes she sings it softly and gently, and sometimes she just says "snow baby glow" over and over quickly to hush her up fast!

My friend Marisa gave me some wool soakers that she knitted for her son, now 2, that he has outgrown. They are so cute! Here is one example.

These loud pants are my handiwork. They were an experiment since I've never knitted pants before and I just made up the pattern as I went along. The yellow waistband was an afterthought since the rise was too low and I had run out of the other yarn. Isn't it great when they are young enough to dress them in whatever we want?

So I wanted to get the Ergo baby carrier to carry Lotus on my back, but she's still a bit small. I tried it out on David and her face was against his back and she didn't like that. Solana liked it however, and Lotus likes riding on the front.

We went to Hilton Head for 2 nights. Solana caught a frog, Lotus had her first swimming pool experience, we went on a family bike ride for the first time since Lotus was born, we got our first sunburns of the year, and David swam with dolphins in the ocean.
